CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

Tara exhaled when Bo came down the hall. His face was gray. Eyes tired. “I’ll come back for his things,” she told Gigi. She held back her questions as they made their way down the steps, her hand at the small of his back. “Watch out for the ice.” They maneuvered around the slick patches.

Gigi followed, Bo’s briefcase in hand. “I hope this wasn’t too much.”

“I hope so, too.” They said goodbye. Tara tucked a blanket around Bo after his seat was reclined. “Will you be okay?”

“Can we just get going?”

“Sure.” She closed his door and hurried around. “Tell me if you get too warm or too cold.”

Bo didn’t answer. Tara pulled out of the drive with her hand on his forehead. This time she checked for a fever.

When they arrived at her house, Bo headed straight for his room and dropped onto the bed with a groan. He’d healed enough that he could sleep on his left side, so long as his right leg was supported with a pillow. He faced the middle of the bed. After helping him get comfortable, Tara got a book and sat beside him, propped against the headboard. While she read, she massaged his neck and shoulders. She combed his hair with her fingers, the way Gram had always done when Tara was sick.

Bo’s breathing changed and she relaxed. In two days, his family would arrive. It was critical that they understood his needs. Tara decided to call and speak directly with Barrett and Sylvia. When she moved to get up, Bo slung his arm across her thighs. “Stay. Please.”

“Okay.” Tara slipped under the covers and lay on her back. “Come here.” She extended her arm and he tucked his head into the crook of her shoulder, draping her waist with his arm. Once his breathing steadied, Tara let herself fall asleep.
